Hall of Fame
Tom Hartley has dedicated his life to helping others within the University, as well as the California Community. Known to all as simply “Chief,” he took great pride in making sure the athletic facilities were second to none. His care, preparation and attention to detail made each home game a first-class event. He worked game operations at home athletic events and his tireless work behind the scenes was part of building California athletics to one of the powerhouses of NCAA Division II. If there were issues or problems that needed resolved, Hartley gathered the necessary resources to make sure everything ran smoothly. Not only was he at home events, but he traveled on the road with the football program as well. Hartley was invested in the success of the student-athletes and he was a role model for them. Even after retirement from the University, he continues to volunteer with athletics and the football team. Fans will often see him on the sidelines at home games. In addition to his continual work with athletics, Hartley has spent over 54 years in serving the California Borough as part of the California Volunteer Fire Department.
