Gary Michaux was a stellar running back for the Vulcans from 1973 to 1977. He rushed for 199 yards in 1975 against Indiana State College and continued during the course of his career to set several top-ten single game rushing records. Michaux is one of the elite 1,000-yard career rushers in Vulcan football history.

Former head coach Elmo Natali said that he was arguably one of the best running backs that California ever had. Michaux has been characterized as elusive, fast, and strong. At some point during a game, he pulled off one of those fabulous runs, said Natali. In his gallant effort against Indiana, Michaux managed to gain 199 yards almost solely by draw plays. This type of play meant that the offensive line faked one way and the running back went the other. In other words he had no blocking in front of him and fought for every inch that he gained, Natali said.

In addition, Michaux won All-Conference honors three of the four years that he played. In 1974 and 1975 he was selected to the Waynesburg All-Opponent Team.
