William "Bull" McPherson powered his way to an athletic distinction that can never be equaled at Cal U. He is and always will be the university's first-ever PSAC wrestling champion.
A Vulcan heavyweight and team captain, McPherson won the 1961 state championship and was also a two-time PSAC state finalist. Tough as his nickname would indicate, McPherson was also a dominant offensive and defensive tackle on the Vulcan football team in the early 1960s. McPherson received all-conference and all-state honors following the 1962 season. With McPherson anchoring the offensive front, Cal compiled a 5-1-1 overall record and averaged nearly 32 points a game. One of the five victories in 1962 was a 54-7 win over Clarion which was Cal's highest single-game scoring output since 1949.
McPherson received his bachelor's degree in education from Cal U in 1963. In 1972, McPherson earned a master's degree in education administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. After his college days, McPherson enjoyed a 30-year career in teaching and coaching at the high school level. The majority of his work was at Clintondale High School in Michigan where he served as football and wrestling head coach, biology teacher and principal before retiring in 1993. He is originally from Carmichaels, PA, and a graduate of Carmichaels High School. McPherson and his wife, Nikki, raised a son and a daughter and live in Harrison Township, Michigan
