One of the most dominant pitchers in school history, Randy Sturgill was originally from Leechburg, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Leechburg High School. He was a four-year pitcher for the Vulcans from 2008-11 and was voted the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year in each of his last two seasons.



Sturgill received ABCA Third-Team All-America honors as a junior and was a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award the following year. He made an immediate impact during his freshman season, as he was voted the 2008 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Sturgill led the team in ERA and strikeouts while posting a 4-1 record, highlighted by a no-hitter against Wheeling Jesuit. He suffered a season-ending injury in his initial start of the 2009 campaign before becoming the ace of a PSAC Championship team as a junior. Sturgill posted a 9-1 record and led the league with 94 strikeouts over 79.0 innings. He threw 156 pitches in a 9.0-inning, complete-game victory against No. 7 West Chester in the PSAC Tournament. Two weeks later, he totaled 172 pitches over 8.1 innings in a win over No. 12 Kutztown in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament. Strugill then set single-season school records with 10 wins and 107 strikeouts as a senior in 2011. He led the PSAC in both wins and strikeouts while posting a career-best 2.23 ERA over 84.2 innings pitched. In only three full seasons, Sturgill established the all-time school record with 23 victories while posting a 23-4 record. He ranks second in school history with 241 career strikeouts and sits third with a 2.88 career ERA while logging over 200 innings pitched.

Strurgill graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2011. Following his college career, he played two seasons of professional independent baseball. Sturgill worked more than 100 innings in his professional career and posted an 8-1 record with the Lake Erie Crushers.
