A rare two-way talent with athleticism to play all over the diamond, Kyle Petty became the school’s first player selected in the MLB Draft in nearly two decades following his senior season. He started games at seven different positions from 2010-13 and earned All-PSAC West status at catcher, relief pitcher and utility during his career.

Petty was the starting catcher on the 2010 PSAC Championship Team and later became a consensus All-American at catcher after being named the 2013 PSAC West Athlete of the Year. As a freshman, he posted a .324 average in only 71 at-bats, plus finished with three saves and 29 strikeouts in 20-plus innings. Petty collected the walk-off RBI single in the opening game of the PSAC Tournament and later tallied three hits in the walk-off victory over nationally-ranked Kutztown in the PSAC Championship. The following year, he hit over a .350 clip with 20 RBI and also registered three wins and three saves in 10 pitching appearances. Petty was utilized all over the diamond in 2012, starting games at five different positions, and was named a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award. He set career highs in virtually every pitching category, logging over 75.0 innings, while also finishing with a .359 average. Petty posted a 7-4 record with seven complete games in his first extended work as a conference starter. In 2013, the New Jersey native was a finalist for the Tino Martinez Award and started games at seven different positions. He finished second in the PSAC in batting average while also pacing the league in slugging percentage. On the mound, Petty posted a 1.69 ERA and four saves in 10 appearances.

Petty was chosen in the 23rd round of the 2013 MLB Draft and played five seasons in the minor leagues with the Seattle Mariners. He advanced to Class AA and was twice named a Minor League All-Star, plus played in the Australian Baseball League and won the 2016 Midway Classic Home Run Derby that was held aboard a retired aircraft carrier in San Diego.

Petty completed his bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2013.
