Denise Marie Hearn-Haley finished her illustrious career at Cal with 1,347 points and 897 rebounds. She was one of the best women’s basketball players at both ends of the court. Her tenacity on defense was unparalleled during the 1981-1985 Vulcan seasons. Because of her intensity and consistency, she became a force all over the court.
Once called a “blue-collar” player by former head coach Betsy Mosher, Hearn-Haley rarely missed any action and worked hard for every point and steal she initiated. During her sophomore year, she scored 14.2 points and pulled down 10.8 rebounds per game. She also compiled the most elbows thrown and received on the squad.
Her most memorable experience of collegiate play was the victory over Slippery Rock during her junior year. Slippery Rock held a two-point lead and possession of the ball with 30 seconds left. Hearn-Haley correctly anticipated a pass and stole the ball for a game-tying lay-up. The game went into overtime with California winning 89-81. This effort led to her highest one-game total during her collegiate career with 25 points.
At the time of her graduation in 1985, Hearn-Haley was the second all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball. She is currently fifth. Hearn-Haley was also a two-time All-PSAC selection and a 1985 fast break All-American.
After living and working in Pittsburgh for 13 years, Hearn-Haley transferred with her company to Hagerstown, Maryland. She lives with her husband Robert, former defensive coordinator for Vulcan football, and daughter Hannah, 2.
