Tennis debuts at eighth in regional rankings

INDIANAPOLIS (April 30) – The California (PA) tennis team was positioned eighth in the latest NCAA Atlantic regional rankings, which were released on Wednesday evening.

The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), plus select independent programs. All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid with the top-four remaining teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids.

The PSAC featured four teams in latest rankings with three teams from the Western Division, while the MEC and CIAA both placed a pair of teams in the rankings on Wednesday.

The latest set of regional rankings featured little movement from last week with the top-seven spots remaining identical. Charleston (WV) (18-4) maintains the top spot and enters the MEC Tournament this weekend on an 11-match winning streak dating back to February. IUP (12-4) is positioned second and Slippery Rock (10-4) is slotted third in the latest regional rankings. Fairmont State (10-4) sits fourth and Salem (11-5), an independent program, remains fifth.

Shaw (15-3) continues to rank sixth in the region and has already secured a berth to the NCAA Tournament after capturing its seventh-consecutive CIAA Championship last weekend. Bloomsburg (13-2) enters the weekend as host of the PSAC Tournament positioned seventh in the region. Cal (11-5) and Johnson C. Smith (10-6) round out the rankings with both making their debuts this week at eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Note, rankings and records are reflective thru matches as of Sunday, April 27.

The Vulcans were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament with a loss at Slippery Rock on Monday, April 28. Five teams positioned in the regional rankings are set to compete in conference tournaments this weekend.

The final rankings and NCAA Tournament selections will be announced on Monday, May 5, at 8:30 p.m.
