Vulcans hold Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony

CALIFORNIA (April 5) – California (PA) inducted eight members into the Athletic Hall of Fame at a banquet on Saturday morning in the South Wing of the Convocation Center.

The Class of 2025 in the Athletic Hall of Fame include Ester Bosch (women's swimming), Class of 2010; Aaron Dinzeo (men's cross country/track & field), Class of 2015; Maria Lopez (women's golf), Class of 2013; Mike Luecke (men's soccer), Class of 2011; Matt Peters (baseball), Class of 2015; Carley Work (women's soccer), Class of 2013; the late Cliff Mitchell (men's basketball); and MerriLyn Gibbs (women's golf coach). Additionally, Cal presented the 2025 Michael Duda Award for Athletic Achievement to Chelsey Burk.
 
Bosch (Barcelona, Spain/Universidad Ramon Illull) swam freestyle events for the Vulcans from 2008-10. She was a six-time All-American and three-time PSAC Champion in her career, plus earned NCAA All-America Honorable Mention a combined six times. She received All-PSAC honors a total of 14 times, which is second-most in program history. Bosch won the 200 freestyle at the PSAC Championships in back-to-back years, plus captured the league title in the 500 freestyle as a junior. She still holds the school record in both the 200 and 500 freestyle and ranks among the top-five all-time in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Dinzeo (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) was a distance runner for the Vulcans from 2010-15. He was a seven-time All-American over his cross country and track & field career. He placed third in the 10,000-meter run at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships before finishing second overall at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships six months later. Dinzeo, who holds the all-time PSAC record in the 10,000 meters, swept the individual cross country title at both the conference and regional championships as a senior. He was voted a First-Team Academic All-American three times and became the school's first-ever Academic All-American of the Year in 2015.

Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) was a golfer for the Vulcans from 2009-13. She was named the 2010 PSAC Freshman of the Year and closed her career as the PSAC Athlete of the Year as a senior. She was a three-time All-PSAC First-Team honoree and twice placed second overall at the league championships before earning medalist honors in 2013. Lopez, who finished with a career scoring average of 79.5 strokes, helped the program capture a trio of PSAC Championships and earn a team qualifier for the NCAA National Championships four times.

Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) was a three-year starting forward for the Vulcans from 2006-09. He finished his career ranked second in school history with both 52 goals and 125 points, plus sits fifth with 21 career assists. Luecke repeated as an All-PSAC West First-Team selection as a junior and senior when he tallied a combined 80 points. He led the league with 18 goals and ranked second in assists in 2008 while helping the Vulcans capture the PSAC Championship, the first in program history, and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) was a four-year starting shortstop for the Vulcans from 2012-15. He broke the all-time school record with 224 hits and finished his career with a .360 average. He was a two-time All-PSAC West First-Team honoree and was selected a First-Team Academic All-American as a senior. In 2015, Peters boasted the highest average by a Cal player in over three decades and finished second in the league with a .446 clip. He played in over 40 games with the Washington Wild Things the summer following his senior season.

Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) was a starting forward/midfielder for the Vulcans from 2009-12. She ranks among the top 10 all-time in school history with both 31 goals and 80 points. She was named a First-Team All-American as a junior after ranking third in the country with 19 goals and leading the PSAC with 44 points. In 2011, Work was voted the PSAC Athlete of the Year and PSAC Tournament MVP after helping the Vulcans win their first-ever PSAC Championship. Work, a four-time All-PSAC selection, was a starter on two NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship teams.

Mitchell (Morgantown, W.Va./St. Francis) was a standout for the Vulcans from 1982-86 and passed away in September 2016 at the age of 52. He finished his career ranked fourth, now currently sixth, all-time in school history with 1,662 points. Mitchell was a three-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection while playing for Tim Loomis. He averaged 19.4 points per game and totaled nearly 600 points during the 1984-85 season when Cal won its first PSAC Championship in 15 years.

Gibbs (Boise, Idaho) served as head coach of the women's golf team from 2005-16. She led the program to five PSAC Championships in a span of seven years while featuring the medalist at the league championships four times in five years. Gibbs was voted the PSAC Coach of the Year four times and led the program to appearances at the NCAA National Championships in eight-consecutive seasons, highlighted by team qualifiers from 2010-13. The initial women's golf coach in school history, she mentored three Athletic Hall of Fame inductees.

Burk was the recipient of the Duda Award, which is named in honor of Michael Duda – an educator who had an avid interest in athletics and served as President of California State Teachers College from 1956 until his death in 1968. The award is presented to a member of the university family for outstanding success in the field of athletics. Burk completed a master's degree from California in sport management and later served as the Athletic Business Manager for the Vulcans. A veteran administrator in intercollegiate athletics, she has worked at VCU, William & Mary, Atlantic 10 Conference and Delaware.
