Vulcans cruise past IUP, 4-0

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 15) – Sophomore Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) set a career high with three assists and classmate Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) scored two goals on Saturday evening to help the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team earn a 4-0 win against IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Complex.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 4-1 this season with a 2-0 mark in league action. Cal U also extended its home unbeaten streak to 19 games (18-0-1), as its last home loss was in October 2010. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks fall to 3-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Megan Politowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored the first goal on Saturday in the 10th minute off a corner kick by Hogan. Just over five minutes later, freshman Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) scored her third goal of the year with an assist from junior Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) at the 14:33-mark.

Following the halftime, the Vulcans stretched their lead to 3-0 when Henderson scored off a feed from Hogan in the 55th minute. Henderson then tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the year at the 69:17-mark with another assist from Hogan, who now leads the league with seven assists.

Sophomore Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) recorded her second-straight shutout, and fourth of the season, after making four saves on Saturday. IUP junior Mara Hricik allowed three goals and made three saves in 60-plus minutes of action.

Cal U continues PSAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 19, when it hosts Millersville at 6 p.m.
