WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 3) – Behind a six-run first inning and a complete-game shutout by junior
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Vulcans claimed a doubleheader split against Millersville at CONSOL Energy Park on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-1 before winning 6-0.
With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team moves to 7-4 overall. Meanwhile, Millersville now stands at 5-2 this season after winning the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship last year.
In Game 2, Petty improved to 3-1 this season after tossing his first complete-game shutout since April 2010. He limited the Marauders to only five base runners (four hits, one walk) and registered four strikeouts in 7.0 innings (97 pitches). In four appearances this year, Petty now boasts a 1.66 ERA in 21.2 innings with 12 strikeouts.
The Vulcans scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the first while facing senior Mike McMonagle, who led the team with a 1.79 ERA last year. With runners on first and second, junior first baseman
AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) collected an RBI double before Petty lined an RBI single through the right side. Freshman shortstop
Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) followed with an RBI single before sophomore first baseman
Joey Borrelli (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) belted a three-run homer, the first of his career. Freshman catcher
Kris Fielding (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) reached on a throwing error and advanced to third on a double by senior center fielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) before the Marauders ended the inning after a pitching change.
Millersville managed a base runner in the fourth and fifth innings before Petty induced double plays both times. In the top of the seventh, the Marauders moved their first runner into scoring position before a pair of fly-outs ended the game.
McMonagle suffered his first loss of the season (0-1) after allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits in just 0.2 innings (40 pitches).
Sophomore
Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California), Handza and Robinson each collected two hits in the win and combined six of the team's 10 hits.
In Game 1, the Marauders took a 2-0 lead behind solo homers by right fielder Chris Edgar and designated hitter Dan Johnson. Cal U answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Peters collected a two-out RBI single through the middle.
Millersville added to its lead with six runs on three hits and three walks in the sixth, 8-1. Following a two-run homer by third baseman Zach Stone, the Marauders scored four unearned runs after a fielding error. Millersville benefited from another fielding error in the seventh, as it increased the lead to 9-1.
Junior
Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) suffered the loss after yielding eight runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks in 5.1 innings (98 pitches). Millersville's Brooks Rothschild improved to 3-0 after allowing one run (earned) on four hits in the complete game (92 pitches).
The Vulcans return to action on Thursday, March 8, when they travel to face Mount Olive (N.C.), which begins a stretch of seven games in eight games across three states.
