Five Vulcans earn academic honors

CALIFORNIA (June 2) – The California (PA) baseball team placed five players on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Beau Bigam, junior Caleb Collins, senior Connor Evans, sophomore Coleman Fletcher and junior Kyle Rizzo received accolades from the organization. All five players earned the honor for the first time in their careers.

Bigam led the pitching staff and established career highs in virtually every category. He finished the year with a 5-4 record in 11 appearances (all starts) and posted a 5.01 ERA over 64.2 innings pitched with 51 strikeouts. Bigam holds a 3.85 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while majoring in mathematics with a concentration in actuarial science and a minor in computer information systems.

A native of Ohio, Collins started all 50 games this year across multiple positions in the infield. He finished the season with a .285 average (45-for-158) and a .389 on-base percentage while totaling 26 RBI and 26 runs scored. Collins maintains a 3.87 GPA while pursuing a degree in marketing with a minor in athletic coaching.

Evans paced the team in several offensive categories while splitting time in the outfield and at first base. He posted a .392 average (71-for-181) and a 1.020 OPS with 24 extra-base hits and finished with 37 RBI, 37 runs scored and 12 steals. Evans completed a bachelor's degree in finance and personal financial planning and is pursuing a second bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies while maintaining a 3.53 GPA.

A 6-foot-3 sophomore, Fletcher shattered career highs while becoming a weekend starter during the season. He finished the year with a 4-3 record over 52.1 innings pitched and 48 strikeouts while making 14 appearances (six starts). Fletcher holds a 3.88 GPA while majoring in secondary education with a concentration in social studies.

Rizzo posted a breakout season while serving as the primary catcher with 36 starts. He posted a .281 average (32-for-114) and a .385 on-base percentage while tallying 21 RBI and 13 runs scored. Rizzo completed his bachelor's degree in health sciences with a concentration in pre-athletic training in December with a 3.54 GPA and boasts a 3.94 GPA in graduate school while majoring in athletic training.

To qualify for CSC Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA and have played in 90 percent of the team's games or started 66 percent of the team's games. For pitcher nominations, the minimum is 17 appearances or 35.0 innings pitched. Additionally, each institution is limited to five nominees in the sport of baseball.

Evans was chosen as CSC Academic All-America finalist and advances to the national ballot with the CSC Academic All-America Teams being announced later this month.
