Cal U sweeps twinbill at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. 26) – Junior Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) belted a pair of homers and earned a complete-game victory on Sunday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep at Charleston by winning 7-4 and 8-2.

With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 6-1 this year. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-2 overall after losing both games of their season-opening doubleheader.

In Game 1, Charleston took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Cal U countered with four runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead. With runners on first and second, sophomore left fielder Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) collected an RBI single before stealing second base. Sophomore designated hitter Joey Borrelli (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) then delivered a two-run single before senior center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) followed with a two-out, RBI single.
The Vulcans added to their lead in the third when Borrelli tallied another two-run single, 6-2, while the Golden Eagles later cut the deficit to 6-3 with an RBI double in the sixth. Petty answered with a solo homer in the seventh, while Charleston scored one run in the bottom of the inning.

Petty anchored the offensive effort, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Borrelli, Handza and freshman shortstop Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) each posted a pair of hits and Borrelli recorded a career-high four RBI.

Junior Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) tossed his second complete of the season to improve to 3-0. He allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks, while posting five strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Charleston starter Tim Ponn suffered the loss after yielding six runs (all earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 5.0 innings of work.

In Game 2, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Carson. The Vulcans added to their lead with a pair of runs on four hits in the third inning. Redshirt freshman catcher Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) started the rally with a double and advanced to third on a single by Handza. Sophomore third baseman Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) followed with an RBI single before Handza scored on a ground-out. Petty then delivered a two-out, RBI single that plated Gasti to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Vulcans added a run in the fourth on a ground-rule RBI double from Kaufman before they scored three runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 8-0. After a leadoff walk to start the inning, Petty belted a two-run homer (sixth career) before Carson tallied an RBI double later in the inning. Charleston scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth on three-straight hits and a sacrifice fly.

In the nightcap, Petty tallied his fifth multi-hit game of the season after going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Carson, Handza and Kaufman all posted a pair of hits in the victory and Carson added two RBI.

Petty improved to 2-0 this season after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits with no walks in 7.0 innings. Golden Eagles' starter Alec Austin was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits and three walks in 4.1 innings.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 27, when it concludes the series at Charleston with a single nine-inning game, starting at 1 p.m.
