CALIFORNIA (Sept. 8) – In a meeting of two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region, the No. 7 Vulcans battled rival IUP to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opener on Wednesday afternoon at Roadman Park.
With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 2-0-1 this year, while IUP goes to 1-0-1. The Vulcans previously won the last four meetings against the Crimson Hawks, including a 2-0 victory in last year's NCAA Tournament.
Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities to break the scoreless tie in the second half. The Crimson Hawks had a pair of shots hit off the post in the opening minutes of the second period, while Vulcan senior forward
Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) was stopped on a penalty kick and a rebound shot in the 89th minute.
Cal U was the aggressor in the extra time, shooting a combined six shots in the two overtimes and preventing IUP from taking a shot.
Junior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) recorded her second-straight shutout after making three saves, while IUP's Kelly Brennan collected 14 saves in the tie.
For the game, the Vulcans held a sizeable 26-9 advantage in shots and 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to non-conference play this weekend when it hosts Wheeling Jesuit at Roadman Park on Sunday, Sept. 12, starting at 4 p.m. Last year, the Vulcans posted a 1-0 victory on the road against the Cardinals.
