WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 3) – Freshman Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) threw a complete-game shutout in first career start on Saturday afternoon as the Vulcans swept a doubleheader, 11-0 and 4-3, against Fairmont State at CONSOL Energy Park.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team extended its win streak to eight games and move to 19-10 overall. The Vulcans also improve to 8-0 in home games this season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Falcons drop to 2-23 this year.

Making his sixth career pitching appearance, Petty scattered five hits and issued one walk in the 7.0- inning shutout. He also recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts and earned his first collegiate victory. Petty allowed only two runners to advance into scoring position and forced the Fighting Falcons to leave six runners on base in Game 1.

Freshman third baseman Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) went a combined 5-for-6 with two RBI, three runs and steals on Saturday. Sophomore centerfielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) collected four hits and senior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) collected a double, homer, two RBI, two runs and two steals.

In Game 1, the Vulcans took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on two hits and two errors. Junior designated hitter Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored the first run of the game when he touched home on an error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. King followed with a RBI single before scoring on a grounder.

Cal U added another three runs in the fourth behind three hits and two errors by the Fighting Scots' pitcher. The inning started with back-to-back singles by freshman first baseman Devin Gorski (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) and King. Gorski eventually scored on another error by the pitcher and King scored on a grounder. Hanzda later delivered a two-out RBI double down the left-field line that scored left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East).

The Vulcans scored their final five rungs of the first game in the bottom of the sixth. Shortstop Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) lined a two-run single before sophomore pinch hitter Dylan DiDomenico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate) delivered a three-run homer (first of his career) later in the inning.

Handza and King each collected three hits in Game 1 and King scored three runs. Sophomore catcher Anthony Lamont (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) and Teagarden also added two RBI.

In the loss, Fairmont State's Jeb Bennett (0-4) threw a complete game and was roughed up for 11 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits and two walks.

In the nightcap, sophomore Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) earned the win after working 6.0 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief with six strikeouts. Freshman Tyler Zimm (Fayetteville, W.Va./Oak Hill) registered his first career save after working the final inning of the game.

Kirker entered the game in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs and Fairmont State already taking a 1-0 lead. After striking out the first batter he faced, Kirker forced a shallow flyout and junior left fielder Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) threw out the runner attempting to score from third to end the inning.

The Vulcans evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when junior shortstop Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) collected a RBI single. Cal U broke the tie in the fourth on a RBI single by King plated Links, who started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

DiMatteo increased the lead to 4-1 in the fifth when he belted a two-run homer, his sixth of the season and 26th of his career.

In the top of the seventh, Zimm retired the first two batters of the inning before issuing a walk and allowing a two-run homer, 4-3. He then induced a ground out to close out the game.

The Fighting Falcons' Tyler Kincaid allowed four runs (all earned) on 10 hits with no walks in 6.0 innings of work.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, April 9, when it opens a four-game conference series against Gannon with a doubleheader in Erie, Pa. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
