WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team pounded out 14 extra-base hits and stole 13 bases on Friday afternoon en route to claiming a non-conference doubleheader sweep against Fairmont State at CONSOL Energy Park, winning 14-4 and 16-2.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 17-10 overall this season and have now won eight of their last nine games. Meanwhile, the Fighting Falcons falls to 2-21 this year
In the two games, junior first baseman
Adam Links (New Hope, Pa. / Central Bucks East) went a combined 5-for-6 with one homer, four RBI and five runs. Sophomore centerfielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) was 4-for-6 with three doubles, one homer, six RBI, three runs and three steals, while junior shortstop
Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) went 3-for-6 with one homer, three RBI, six runs and four steals.
Handza anchored the offensive attack in Game 1, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles, a solo homer, five RBI, two runs and one steal. Senior right fielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) added a double and two RBI, while Teagarden belted his first career homer and stole three bases.
Redshirt sophomore
Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) in 5.0 innings, while tying his season high of 10 strikeouts. He scattered five hits and issued three walks n his seventh start of the year. Fairmont State starter Jason Gladden was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (all earned) on five hits and seven walks in 2.1 innings.
Handza gave the Vulcans a quick 1-0 lead when he belted his seventh homer of the season to start the bottom of the first. Cal U added to its lead in the second when Teagarden stole home and Handza scored on sacrifice fly by DiMatteo.
After Fairmont State scored a run in the top of the third, the Vulcans countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Links started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt before scoring on single by freshman third baseman
Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg). Sophomore catcher
Anthony Lamont (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) followed with a RBI double and Handza later delivered a two-run double.
The offensive explosion continued for Cal U, as it plated four more runs in the fourth on a fielding error and another two-run double by Handza. The Fighting Falcons scored a pair of run in the fifth before the Vulcans added a run in both the fifth and sixth to take a 14-3 lead. Sophomore Kyle Bower (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the fifth and Teagarden hit a solo longball to start the sixth.
Redshirt freshman
Greg Sobol (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) made his first career appearance in relief, allowing one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Links went 4-for-4 with a double, three-run homer, four RBI and four runs. Junior left fielder
Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished with two hits and three RBI, while Teagarden was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two steals.
Senior
Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) earned his fourth win of the season after allowing two runs on two hits in 5.0 innings. He also issued three walks, while striking out seven. Fighting Falcons' Pat Robinette (1-5) suffered the loss after being roughed up for 11 runs (seven earned) in 3.1 innings of walk with nine hits and three walks.
The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the second on a RBI single by Faust and sacrifice fly by Welsh before Links hit a three-run longball (first of the season; fourth in his career) in the third, 5-0.
After Fairmont State scored two runs in the top of the fourth, Cal U exploded for nine runs on seven hits and one error. The Vulcans scored their first two runs of the inning on a throwing error by the third baseman on a dropped third strike before junior second baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) lined a RBI double. Links followed with a RBI double, plating Ordy before scoring on a sacrifice fly. After a run-scoring single by Welsh, Teagarden and Handza collected back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Vulcans scored their final two runs of the game in the fifth when freshman pinch hitter
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) drew a bases-loaded walk and Welsh hit into a fielder's choice.
In the nightcap, seven different players for Cal U stole a base.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 3, when they again host Fairmont State at CONSOL Energy Park with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
