Vulcans win seventh-straight with sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 5) – Senior centerfielder Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) belted a pair of homers on Sunday to help the Vulcans earn a doubleheader sweep against Gannon University at CONSOL Energy Park, winning 11-5 and 5-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 25-7 overall and 10-2 in league play. The Vulcans now hold a two-game lead in the divisional standings with six conference games remaining. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 4-25 overall and 2-14 in divisional action.

Selby finished the day, going 3-for-8 with one double, two homers, six RBI and four runs scored. Senior third baseman Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) went 5-for-6 with one RBI, while freshman left fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) added four hits and three runs scored in the doubleheader.

In Game 1, Schmidt went 4-for-4 with one RBI and six other Vulcan starter posted multi-hit games. Selby and senior shortstop Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) each registered three RBI and Selby scored three runs.

Cal U took an early 3-0 lead in the first behind a two-run double by Busti and a RBI single by Schmidt. The Vulcans added three runs in the second to stretch their lead to 6-0. Sophomore Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) reached base to the open the inning and advanced to third on a single by Handza. After a groundout scored Welsh, Selby belted a two-run homer (third of the season) to right field.

In the top of the third, Cal U expanded its lead with a RBI single by junior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) before Gannon scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, 7-2. The Vulcans plated four runs on five hits in the fifth to open up an 11-1 lead. Handza and Selby each lined RBI doubles in the inning, while Cal U also collected runs via a passed ball and sacrifice fly. The Golden Knights scored the final two runs of the game in the sixth.

Sophomore Chris Plummer (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Westlane) improved to 4-0 in his first season with the program after yielding three runs (two earned) on six hits in 5.0 innings. Freshman Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) worked the final 2.0 innings, allowing two unearned runs and registering three strikeouts.

Junior starter Drew Rojek suffered the loss after working only 1.0 inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits.

In the nightcap, Gannon held a 2-1 lead after four innings before Cal U mounted a four-run fifth to take a 5-2 advantage. With runners on first and second, DiMatteo lined a RBI double to left field and Selby followed with a three-run longball (fourth of the year) to right field.

Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Knights had runners on second and third before Schmidt retired the next three batters in order to earn his fifth save of the season.

Freshman Pat Gannon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) earned the victory after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings with five strikeouts. Junior Greg Radwan was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for five runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings.

Cal U returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 8, with a road non-conference doubleheader against Seton Hill University. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
