WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 25) – In the final doubleheader of the regular season which would decide the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West champion, the No. 27 California University of Pennsylvania baseball team was swept by league-newcomer Mercyhurst College on Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park, losing 9-5 and 10-1.
The Vulcans finished the regular season with a 31-14 overall record and second in the divisional standings with a 16-8 mark. Meanwhile, the Lakers improve to 32-14 overall and win the league title with an 18-6 record.
In Game 1, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a groundout before Mercyhurst answered with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Lakers expanded their lead to 4-1 in the third on a two-run single before the Vulcans mounted a four-run fifth, 5-4. With runners on first and second, junior right fielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) lined a RBI double before senior centerfielder
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) followed with a RBI single. DiMatteo and Selby then scored on a two-run single through the middle by senior shortstop
Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels).
Mercyhurst reclaimed the lead, 6-5, with two runs in the sixth before sealing the victory with three unearned runs in the seventh, 9-5.
Junior
Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. He issued three walks and recorded six strikeouts while on the mound. Senior John Mang improved to 8-1 after allowing five runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings.
DiMatteo headlined the Cal U offense in Game 1, going 3-for-4 and two runs scored, while Busti finished with three RBI. Selby stole third base in the first inning to tie the school's all-time mark of 77 stolen bases set by former teammate
Drew Aniceti (2005-08).
In the nightcap, the Lakers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring five runs on five hits in the third inning. The Vulcans avoided the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when Busti belted a solo homer (seventh of the season), 5-1. Mercyhurst added five runs in the seventh against three different Cal U pitchers to close out the 10-1 contest.
Junior
Ryan Lavrusky (Temple Terrace, Fla./King) was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (six earned) in 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Junior Adam Gray picked up the win (4-1) after allowing only one run in 6.0 innings.
Busti went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while senior catcher
Stephen Hermann (Levelgreen, Pa./Penn-Trafford) added a pair of hits.
Cal U enters the PSAC Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West in Bracket A. The Vulcans begin play at the double-elimination tournament in Lancaster, Pa., on Monday, May 4, at 9:30 a.m. against Shippensburg University (23-30), the No. 3 seed in the East.
