Cal U sweeps season-opening doubleheader

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. 26) – The Vulcans opened the 2009 campaign in impressive fashion on Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader, 12-0 and 12-3, against the University of Charleston (W.Va.) at Appalachian Power Park.

In first game, senior catcher Stephen Hermann (Levelgreen, Pa./Penn-Trafford) anchored the offense with a 3-for-4 performance with a sixth-inning grand slam. Senior second baseman Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and three runs scored, while senior Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added a pair of hits including a three-run homer.

Sophomore Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) also collected a three-run homer as a late-inning replacement.

After sophomore Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) left the game after the first inning, sophomore transfer Chris Plummer (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Westlane) tossed four scoreless of relief to earn the victory. Plummer allowed only two hits and yielded no walks with three strikeouts.

Senior Corry Ryan (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) closed out the shutout after throwing two scoreless innings of relief.

The Vulcans collected 13 hits against four Golden Eagle pitchers, including four homers, in the first game.

In the nightcap, Hermann and Schmidt again led the offense with each player posting three RBI. Hermann belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning, while Schmidt went three-for-five with a pair of doubles.

Junior left fielder Kurt Thomas (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) went four-for-four with one run and one RBI, while junior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) hit 3-for-4 with a solo longball in the first inning and finished with two runs scored and two RBI. Faust also posted a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Senior Jon Squeglia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) threw four shutout innings and scattered three hits to earn the victory before a trio of relievers closed out the game.

Cal U totaled 12 runs on 18 hits, including six extra-base hits.

Cal U returns to action at the Savannah Invitational, playing nine games from Feb. 28-March 7.
