No. 20 Cal U edges Davis & Elkins, 1-0

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 14) – In a meeting of two of the top 10 teams in the Atlantic Region, the No. 20 Vulcans earned a 1-0 victory over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday afternoon at Roadman Park in non-conference play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 11-3-1 overall. The Vulcans are now only one victory shy of tying the single-season school record for wins with five games remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Senators fall to 10-3 this year.

After a scoreless first half, senior forward Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) tallied her team-leading 10th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Darija Davidson (Courtice, Ontario/St. Stephen's) in the 71st minute. D&E nearly tied the score in the final two minutes of the game as a shot attempt by sophomore Alexa McCartney hit the post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) registered her third shutout in the last four games after making five saves in the win. Senior Jackie Krum finished with five saves for Davis & Elkins.

In the game, the Vulcans out-shot the Senators by a sizeable 19-8 margin and also held a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.

Nationally-ranked Cal U entered the game ranked third and fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and NCAA regional rankings. Davis & Elkins, who is in first place in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) standings, are ranked fifth and ninth in the polls, respectively.

The Vulcans return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play when they host Mercyhurst on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Roadman Park. The game is now scheduled for a 12 p.m. start. Both Cal U and Mercyhurst enter the weekend contest tied with IUP for first place in the divisional standings with 19 points behind equal 6-2-1 conference records.
