Evans collects weekly regional laurels

CONCORD, W.Va. (Feb. 25) – Following a torrid season-opening series last week, California (PA) senior outfielder Connor Evans was voted the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week on Wednesday afternoon.

Evans registered a staggering 2.346 OPS over three games, as the Vulcans opened the campaign with a series sweep of Ohio Dominican at EQT Park. He finished a combined 10-for-12 (.833 average) with six RBI and seven runs scored against the Panthers, highlighted by five extra-base hits. In Game 1 of the series on Thursday, Evans tallied three hits, two RBI, two runs scored, one steal and one hit by pitch in a 15-10 season-opening victory. The Hermitage, Pennsylvania, native then registered three hits and two runs scored, highlighted by a two-run homer, in a 7-2 win in Game 2 of the series on Friday. Evans closed the week by totaling four hits, two RBI and three runs scored in a 12-6 victory in Game 3 against ODU.

A Hickory product, Evans is the program's third player in the last four years to be chosen the NCBWA Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week. He posted a .330 average (33-for-100) with 20 RBI and 20 runs scored last spring in his first season with the Vulcans. Evans started his collegiate career at Chestnut Hill in 2022 before transferring to Kennesaw State (GA), a NCAA Division I program.

Cal is slated to play four games over the next week-plus before beginning traveling to Florida for its annual spring trip. The Vulcans will play three games in West Virginia this weekend before playing a single game at home on March 4.
