LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Sept. 8) – Following his performance in the season-opener last week, California senior transfer Ben Sauerländer was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Sauerländer tallied a goal and an assist while making his program debut on Thursday night to help the Vulcans register a 3-0 win at Wheeling. He scored a goal in the 57th minute to extend the lead to 2-0 before adding an assist in the 74th minute. Cal earned its first shutout win in a season-opener since the 2011 campaign.
A native of Germany, Sauerländer played the previous three season at Eastern New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference (LSC). He totaled 17 points over 44 career games with the Greyhounds, including 12 starts last fall.
Sauerländer is the first player to be tabbed PSAC West Athlete of the Week in nearly two calendar years.
Cal returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, when it faces Malone (OH) for its home opener at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, starting at 6 p.m.
