California blanks Wheeling in season-opener

Visco tallies five saves to record first career shutout; Sauerländer posts goal, assist in debut

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 4) – Behind goals from three different players, the California (PA) men's soccer team started the season with a 3-0 victory at Wheeling on Thursday night in non-conference action.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (1-0) earned their first victory in the series with the Cardinals since 2016 (0-1-2).
• Cal also registered its first shutout win in a season-opener since the 2011 campaign.
• The teams nearly entered halftime in a scoreless tie before the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead at the 43:08-mark when sophomore Eduardo Miranda notched his first career goal off a feed from junior Jacob Gretz.
• Cal added to the advantage in the 57th minute when senior transfer Ben Sauerländer scored off an assist from sophomore Jaime Marcelo Espinosa.
• Senior Brady Olsen tallied a goal at the 73:47-mark following a pass from Sauerländer to extend the lead to a 3-0 margin.
• Senior AJ Visco made five saves while recording his first career shutout on Thursday.
• The Cardinals finished with a slight 12-11 shot advantage yet held a sizeable 14-3 edge in corner kicks after being credited with 11 corners half in the second half.

• Cal is idle for nearly a week before hosting Malone (OH) on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, starting at 6 p.m.
