Vulcans rank fifth at championships

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (May 9) – The Vulcans scored in three field events and qualified six track entries for finals at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Friday.

Senior Kat Henderson earned All-PSAC status in the heptathlon after finishing second in the event. She set a personal record in the heptathlon and reached the NCAA provisional standard after totaling 4,591 points, the second-best mark in school history. Henderson tied for the victory in the high jump yesterday before placing second in the long jump on Friday. She posted a season-best distance of 5.29 meters (17-4.25 feet) on her initial attempt. The West Virginia native also established a personal record in the 800-meter run by crossing the finish line in 2 minutes, 31.26 seconds. Henderson garnered All-PSAC laurels for the second time in her career, as she placed second in the pentathlon at the 2024 indoor championships.

Freshman Loreena Manser garnered All-PSAC laurels in the long jump and qualified for the finals in a pair of individual events. She finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.82 meters (19-1.25 feet) on her first attempt on Friday, becoming the first All-PSAC honoree in the long jump since the 2016 outdoor championships. Manser also placed third in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 24.606. The Virginia native registered a season-best time of 11.86 seconds, also wind-aided, during the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash.

The California (PA) women's track & field team sits fifth in the team standings after seven events. The Vulcans have totaled 24 points in three events at the league championships. Host Slippery Rock sits atop the team standings with 54 points after last winning the conference title in 2023. East Stroudsburg ranks second at the event with 42 points and Millersville sits third in the standings with 37 points.

Manser was also a member of the 4x100-meter relay that finished second in the preliminaries at the league championships. The relay of Manser, freshman Riley Tighe, sophomore Alessandra Peccon and junior Alice Etienne posted a season-best time of 47.35 seconds to advance to the finals of the event.

Individually, Tighe established a pair of personal records and qualified for the finals in the 100 meters. She placed eighth in the preliminaries of the 100 meters with a wind-aided time 12.07 and set a personal best in the 200 meters with a wind-aided time of 25.35 seconds. Peccon also established a personal record in the 100 meters during the preliminaries with a wind-aided time of 12.467 seconds.

The Vulcans scored a pair of entries in the high jump on Friday. Freshman Brianna Lee placed fifth in the event with a height of 1.66 meters (5-5.25 feet) and sophomore Emily Mahle cleared a mark of 1.61 meters (5-3.25 feet) to finish eighth overall.

Cal qualified multiple entries for the finals in the 800-meter run at the league championships. Sophomore Gabriella Fralin placed fourth during the preliminaries with a time of 2:18.22, while classmate Rosalyn Perozzi crossed the finish line in 2:19.75 to finish seventh overall.

Senior Kirsten Gross established a personal record in the 400-meter dash after rounding the track in 59.19 seconds. Senior Tatia Battiste set personal bests in both the 100 and 200 meters, wind-aided, during the preliminaries on Friday. She posted a time of 12.48 seconds in the 100 meters and finished the 200 meters with a time of 25.85 seconds.

The Vulcans close out the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, May 10, with entries in nine different events, starting at 11 a.m.
