PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 8) – California (PA) senior
Beyoncé Kelly placed second in the high jump to earn First-Team All-America status on Friday afternoon during the opening day of the NCAA Championships.
Kelly is now a four-time All-American in the high jump with multiple top-five finishes. She matched the highest indoor finish in program history on Friday, as
Divonne Franklin placed second in the 60-meter dash last year.
A native of Maryland, Kelly set a season-best with a mark of 1.75 meters (5-8.75 feet) on initial attempt at the height. She was one of three entries to clear the mark on Friday after also clearing the bar at 1.62 (5-3.75 feet), 1.67 (5-5.75 feet), and 1.72 meters (5-7.75 feet) on her opening attempts at the heights. Kelly earned the tiebreaker for second place over Azusa Pacific (Calif.) junior Eliana Saunders by virtue of clearing the mark on her first attempt, while Saunders accomplished it on third attempt.
Pittsburg State (Kan.) junior Erica Schamel captured the national title by reaching a height of 1.78 meters (5-10.0 feet) after entering the event ranked third on the national performance list.
