BETHANY, W.Va. (March 26) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's track & field team captured the title at the Bethany Invitational on Saturday, while senior
Divonne Franklin (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) broke the school record in the 200-meter dash and reached the NCAA provisional standard in the 100-meter dash over the weekend while at the Raleigh Relays.
Franklin posted a record-setting time of 24.50 seconds to place 14th overall in the 200 meters while in North Carolina. She eclipsed the school record set by current assistant coach
Alicia Collier in 2019 by over two-tenths of a second. Franklin reached the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-qualifying mark in the event while tallying the fastest time in the league this spring. The Philadelphia native also registered a time of 11.76 seconds in the 100 meters while at the Raleigh Relays. She finished in 10th place in a field of over 70 sprinters, almost exclusively from NCAA Division I programs. Franklin already ranks fifth on the national performance list in the 100 meters this season while making her outdoor debut this weekend.
In addition to Franklin, junior
Beyoncé Kelly (Edgewood, Md./Harford Technical) also competed at the Raleigh Relays this weekend. She finished in 12th place in the high jump after clearing 1.65 meters (5-5.0 feet) on her second attempt at the height.
Competing in frigid and snowy conditions in West Virginia, the Vulcans captured their second invitational title of the season. Cal U won six events while at Bethany to finish first in the team standings with 188 points. Grove City placed second with 131.25 points and Waynesburg finish third with 71.25 points.
Cal U featured the top-four finishers in the triple jump on Saturday. Sophomore
Quintasia Streeter (Brentwood, Pa./Brentwood) won the event for the first time in her career with a mark of 10.50 meters (34-5.5 feet). Freshman
Tatum Hoffman (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) placed second with a distance of 10.34 meters (33-11.25 feet) and classmate
Jazzy Harper (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) posted a mark of 10.16 meters (33-4.0 feet) to finish third overall.
Hoffman claimed the victory in the long jump at Bethany with a personal-best distance of 5.06 meters (16-7.25 feet). Junior
Anna Ebersole (Pottstown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) finished second in the event with a mark of 5.02 meters (16-5.75 feet) and Harper placed third on Saturday with a distance of 4.87 meters (15-11.75 feet).
Ebersole won the shot put for the first time in her career with a heave of 11.29 meters (37-0.5 feet). Senior
Shantel Springer (East Palestine, Ohio/Springfield Local) set a personal record in the event with a distance of 11.14 meters (36-6.75 feet) to place second overall in the event. Springer also finished second in the hammer throw on Saturday with a mark of 36.90 meters (121-1.0 feet).
The Vulcans cruised to the victory in the 4x400-meter relay at the event, as freshman
Taylor Timmons (Butler, Pa./Butler), Ebersole, junior
Malia Anderson (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) and junior
Sydney Urbine (Centerville, Pa./Beth-Center) won the race by over 20 seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 20.87 seconds.
Individually, Timmons won the 400-meter dash while in West Virginia by over two-tenths of a second with a time of 1:03.62. Anderson placed second in the 800-meter run after crossing the finish line in 2:22.03, while Urbine finished fifth in the event on Saturday with a time of 2:34.92.
Freshman
Iyana Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington Carver HSES) claimed the victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a time 1:12.80. Sophomore
Madeline Curtis (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) placed second in the 1,500-meter run by posting a time of 5:09.82, while junior
Tatyana Young (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) finished in second place with a time of 12.71 seconds in the finals of the 100-meter dash.
In the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, junior
Kailee Bunyard (Columbia, Md./Atholton) reached the PSAC-qualifying mark with a time of 15.39 seconds.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, April 2, when it competes at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock.
