PITTSBURGH (Oct. 8) – The Vulcans featured a pair of top-10 runners on Saturday morning while finishing fifth in the team standings at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational held in Schenley Park.

The California (PA) men's cross country team totaled 141 points to place fifth in a field of 12 teams. Slippery Rock earned the invitational title with 56 points with four top-15 runners. The host Tartans ranked second in the field with 77 points and IUP placed third with 91 points.

Junior Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) led the team and finished eighth overall with a time of 26 minutes, 1.1 seconds. He posted an average pace time of 5:14 over the eight-kilometer course while competing in a field of 120 runners. Bernarding has recorded a pair of top-10 finishes this season after previously placing fifth last month at the Daemen Alumni Invitational.

Redshirt freshman Jonathan Thrush (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) also registered a top-10 finish on Saturday after crossing the finish line in 26:05.4 to place 10th overall. Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) finished in 13th place with a time of 26:19.5, while freshman Kolby Kent (Roscoe, Pa./California) posted a time of 28:08.3 to place 55th overall. Freshman Amin Contreras (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Jefferson) rounded out the team scorers at Carnegie Mellon after finishing in 79th place with a time of 29:06.7.

Josh Kalapos, who was attached to the Carnegie Mellon Alumni, won the invitational title by just over one second with a time of 25:49.9.

The Vulcans return to action in two weeks when they compete at the Bill Lennox Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock on Oct. 22. The event will be held at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
