CLEVELAND (Nov. 18) – Senior
Kira Goin (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Dawson College) reached the NCAA Championship 'B' standard and recorded the fastest time in the 200 butterfly in school history on Sunday while competing over the weekend at the seventh-annual Magnus Cup hosted by Cleveland State.
The California University of Pennsylvania swimming team registered over 30 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship qualifying times at the 16-team event.
Goin became the first Vulcan swimmer to post a NCAA 'B' time this season after touching the wall in 2 minutes, 5.10 seconds in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly on Sunday. She broke the previous school record in the event set by
Petra Zavadilova, who recorded a time of 2:05.75 at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Goin qualified for 'B' finals and placed 15th overall with a mark of 2:05.30. On the second day, she cut nearly three seconds off her league-qualifying mark in the 100 butterfly and set the second-fastest time in school history in the event with a time of 56.33 seconds in the preliminaries. Goin qualified for the 'B' finals and finished 16th overall in the session with a time of 56.42 seconds.
In the relay events, Goin registered the second-fastest relay split in school history in the 400 medley relay with a time of 55.88 seconds in the 100 butterfly, as the team recorded their top-time in the event in Ohio. She also notched the fourth-fastest relay split in the 200 medley relay, while the team posted their top-time in the event this year.
Junior
Karley Owens (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) trimmed nearly eight seconds off her league-qualifying standard in the 200 IM at Cleveland State. She posted a time of 2:09.28 in the preliminaries, which is the third-fastest time in school history in the event. Owens qualified for the 'D' finals of the session and recorded a time of 2:10.14. She also qualified for the 'C' finals in the 400 IM after taking 6.5 seconds off her PSAC-qualifying time after touching the wall in 4:38.13 in the preliminaries. Owens reached the league standard in the 200 backstroke for the first time this season with a time of 2:07.86 and qualified for the 'C' finals.
Freshman
Kelsie Drennen (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont Senior) qualified for the 'D' finals in the 100 backstroke and trimmed over one second off her league-qualifying mark with a time of 58.95 seconds, while also recording the fifth-fastest time in the event in school history. She also qualified for the 'D' finals in the 200 backstroke and posted a time of 2:08.00 to hit the PSAC-qualifying mark for the first time in her career in the event. Drennen recorded league standards in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle over the weekend.
In the 500 freestyle, senior
Lauren McAnany (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys), sophomore
Krista Wycinsky (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), junior
Abigail Trocchio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and sophomore
Emma Klesen (South Park, Pa./South Park) all reached the league-qualifying mark for the first time in the event. McAnany led the group with a time of 5:18.76 in the preliminaries, while Wycinsky reached the wall in 5:22.18. Trocchio registered a mark of 5:25.51 and Klesen secured a time of 5:27.85 in the session. The group of teammates also reaching the league-championship standard in the 200 freestyle in the preliminaries for the first time on the second day.
Sophomore
Arli Tilves (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) and junior
Chassidy Raymond (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) each qualified for the league championships for the first time this season the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Tilves also hit the league-qualifying mark in the 100 freestyle after touching the wall in 54.75 seconds, which is over a two-second improvement in the event.
In the 1650 freestyle, Wycinsky and Trocchio both made their first appearance in the event this season and reached the PSAC-qualifying standard. Wycinsky registered a time of 18:46.91,while Trocchio posted a time of 18:53.27. McAnany and Klesen also registered over a 39-second improvement to their league-standard times this season during the session.
The Vulcans recorded their highest finish in the relay events in the 800 freestyle relay, as McAnany, Trocchio, Wycinsky and Klesen recorded a season-best time of 8:01.58 to place 22nd overall.
Cal U returns to action in nearly two weeks when it travels to Fairmont, West Virginia, to face Davis & Elkins and the host Fighting Falcons in a tri-meet on Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.
