Box ScoreCALIFORNIA (Sept. 7) – In a meeting of league champions from last season, the No. 12 Vulcans battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Davis & Elkins in non-conference play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Sunday afternoon.
With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 2-0-1 overall after playing three games in four days. Meanwhile, Davis & Elkins stands at 0-0-1 this season under head coach Gene Smith, who served as head coach at Cal U the last two years.
The teams battled for control in the early minutes of the game before the Vulcans placed a pair of shots on goal in just over a minute before attempting another shot following a corner kick. Cal U attempted to take the lead in the final seconds before halftime on a header that went wide right.
In the second half, Cal U and D&E traded shot attempts before the Senators were issued the only yellow card of the game in the 80th minute. Following the card, the Vulcans were unable to score on a direct kick at the 80:11-mark.
Cal U and D&E both managed one shot attempt in the first overtime period before the Senators attempted the only shot on goal in the second overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) recorded her first shutout of the season after making four saves on Sunday. D&E goalkeeper Ashley Winkelspecht tallied six saves while playing all 110 minutes.
The Vulcans finished the game with a 14-6 shot advantage, including an 11-4 edge in regulation. Cal U also posted an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks behind six in the first half.
Cal U returns to league play on Wednesday, Sept. 10, when it hosts rival Slippery Rock at 7 p.m.
