Game 2 Box ScoreWASHINGTON, Pa. (April 22) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball claimed a doubleheader split with Davis & Elkins in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park, falling 8-5 before winning 11-4.
With the split, the Vulcans move to 25-18 this season behind an 18-10 mark at home. Meanwhile, the Senators sit at 17-20 overall in their first year in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
In Game 2, the Vulcans scored multiple runs in four innings and eight of nine starters collected at least one hit. Senior right fielder
Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) finished 2-for-2 with a three-run triple, two runs scored and one walk while hitting cleanup. Sophomore first baseman
David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior catcher
Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) also tallied two hits. Sophomore third baseman
Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) and senior center fielder
Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) each scored twice and Fennell stole a pair of bases.
Cal U took a 4-0 lead in the first behind a bases-loaded triple by Gasti, who later scored on a ground-out. The Senators scored a run in the both the second and third innings before the Vulcans countered with two runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Cal U scored a run on a fielder's choice and a throwing error on the play also allowed the runner to score from second.
D&E trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in the top of the fourth before Cal U answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Kaufman opened the inning with a ground-rule double and Fennell then reached on a walk before both scored on an RBI single by Marcus. The Vulcans added three insurance runs in the sixth after collecting five singles and a walk. Senior left field

Kris Fielding (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) delivered back-to-back RBI singles before senior shortstop

Andre Jones (New Castle, Pa./Union) earned the win while making his first career start. He yielded four runs (all earned) and scattered eight hits over 4.0 innings (70 pitches) while posting four strikeouts. Junior
Luke Burton (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of hitless relief to record his first save of the year. D&E starter Forest Williamson (2-2) suffered the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and four walks in 3.1 innings (76 pitches).
In Game 1, the Vulcans tied the game in the bottom of the fifth before the Senators scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh. Fennell finished 2-for-4 with two triples, one RBI and two runs scored, while Carson and Fielding both added a pair of hits.
Cal U took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by Marcus and sacrifice fly by Gasti before D&E took a 4-2 lead in the second. The Senators managed an inside-the-park homer in the inning when junior left fielder
Chris Mitko (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) crashed into the wall when attempting to make a catch and remained on the ground until after catcher Bryant Hines rounded the bases.
In the fifth, the Vulcans tied the score after benefited from two errors in the inning. Senior second baseman
Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) reached on a fielding error to open the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Fennell lined his second triple of the game. Cal U then tied the game when Carson executed a squeeze bunt that resulted in a single and Fennell scoring the game-tying run.
D&E reclaimed the lead in the sixth with back-to-back RBI singles before Cal U prevented another run from scoring by recording an out on a rundown between third and home. In the bottom of the inning, Mitko reached on a leadoff single and stole second and third before scoring on a ground-out. The Senators stretched the lead to 8-5 in the seventh by scoring on a base-loaded walk and hit by pitch.
The Vulcans utilized five different pitchers in the game with redshirt junior
Adam Mylant (Latrobe, Pa./Derry) being saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on two hits and two walks in 1.0-plus inning of work. Redshirt freshman
Alex Ziegler (Butler, Pa./Butler) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings of relief while yielding just two hits. D&E freshman Noah Jarboe (5-1) earned the complete-game victory after allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk in 7.0 innings (101 pitches).
Cal U closes out the regular season with a four-game weekend series against Seton Hill, beginning with a doubleheader at CONSOL Energy Park on Friday, April 25, at 1 p.m.
