WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 15) – Behind a complete-game shutout sophomore Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) in Game 1, the Vulcans posted a doubleheader sweep against Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park, winning 1-0 and 8-1.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 6-5 overall. Meanwhile, Lake Erie falls to 6-5 this season and has lost four of its last five games.

In Game 1, Fennell tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and faced just two batters over the minimum in 7.0 innings (65 pitches). He posted five strikeouts and issued no walks, while allowing only two runners to advance into scoring position. Fennell has registered complete-game shutouts in back-to-back starts and ranks second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with a 0.47 ERA this season.

The Vulcans scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first behind three-straight, one-out singles. Senior left fielder Derrik Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) collected the opening hit of the inning and later scored on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin).

Cal U later managed to advance a runner to third base in three-straight innings and finished the game with eight runners left on base, including seven in scoring position. Lake Erie posted its best scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth, as the inning started with a single. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to second before Fennell recorded a strikeout and ground-out to end the inning.

Six different Vulcans collected a hit, all singles, in the game and Marcus extended his consecutive RBI streak to seven games. Lake Erie starter Brad Raley (2-1) suffered the loss after yielding one run (earned) on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.

In Game 2, Cal U scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim its first doubleheader sweep of the year. Sophomore starter Jack Dennis (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park) earned his first victory of the year after allowing one run (earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings (64 pitches). Lake Erie sophomore Connor Fuller was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on two walks and one hit in 0.2 innings of relief.

The Vulcans broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits, three walks and two hit by pitch. Fennell, who played third base and center field in Game 2, opened the inning with a triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Cal U loaded the bases on back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch with two outs before junior shortstop Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) lined a three-run double to left-center field. The Vulcans again loaded the bases before Fennell delivered a two-run single and junior designated hitter Justin Taylor (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle) followed with a two-run single.

In the sixth, Lake Erie scored its only run of the doubleheader on a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

Fennell went 3-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base. Peters and Taylor both added three RBI in the victory. Marcus also extended his hitting streak to 11 games after a collecting a hit in each game on Saturday.
