Cal U defeated by No. 18 Mount Olive, 23-2

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. (Feb. 23) -- The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team was defeated by No. 5 Mount Olive 23-2 in a non-conference tilt that wrapped up a three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops the Vulcans to 1-2 overall after they split a doubleheader yesterday. Meanwhile, the Trojans improve to 10-4 overall this season.

Junior Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) led Cal U at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance and an RBI, while junior Blake Henderson (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI in the loss.

Senior Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) helped give the Vulcans the lead in the first inning. After reaching on a single, Carson stole second and third before being knocked in with a sacrifice fly by Peters.

Mount Olive responded in the bottom of the first with a 10-run inning in which the first five batters all reached base. The frame was capped off by a two-out, three-run home run that gave the Trojans a 10-1 lead. Mount Olive added two in the second and a run in the fourth and fifth to take a 14-1 lead through five innings.

After a pair of one-out walks put a runner in scoring position in the sixth, Cal U plated another run in the sixth when Henderson singled to right-center field to make the score 14-2. Mount Olive tacked on three runs in the seventh and six more in the eighth to wrap up the victory.

The Vulcans return to the diamond this weekend when they host Shippensburg for a three-game series. The series opens with doubleheader at CONSOL Energy Park on Saturday, March 1, at 12 p.m.
