CALIFORNIA (Sept. 5) – Four different players scored a goal on Thursday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team earned a season-opening 4-1 victory over Walsh (Ohio) at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The win was the first victory under head coach Emedin Sabic, who spent the past 10 years as a player and assistant coach at Cal U. The Vulcans have now six-consecutive season-openers and Walsh starts the year at 0-1 after being picked to finish fourth in the preseason GLIAC South poll.
The Cavaliers took a quick 1-0 lead at the 2:36-mark on a goal by senior Chris Lynch before the Vulcans later countered with a pair of goals in less than three minutes. Senior Gaby Deller-Borgono (Toronto, Ontario/Oakwood C.I.) tied the game in the 15th minute before junior Kevin Helbig (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored the go-ahead goal on a header off a corner kick by sophomore transfer Russell Tattersall (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) at the 17:14-mark.
Cal U added to its lead in the 62nd minute when junior Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) scored off a pass from sophomore David Deamer (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern), who made his second career start. Just over seven minutes later, junior Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) added an insurance goal following a pass from Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)).
In the victory, junior Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) collected a pair of saves in 90 minutes. The Vulcans out-shot the Cavaliers by a 13-11 margin after both teams attempted eight shots in the second half.
Cal U opens a three-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 7, when it travels to Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, Pa., at 1 p.m.
