WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 6) – For the second-straight day at CONSOL Energy Park, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Clarion on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 9-2 and 4-1.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 20-7 this season with a 7-1 record in league play. Cal U, who allowed only one earned run in four games this weekend, has now swept the conference series against Clarion six times in the last eight years. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drop to 1-21 overall with a 1-11 record in conference action.
In Game 1, Cal U scored at least one run in every inning and collected 14 hits in the victory. Sophomore shortstop
Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and junior second baseman
Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs. Freshman left fielder
Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) collected a pair of hits and scored twice, while senior catcher
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) tied a season high with four RBI.
Junior third baseman
Derrik Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) opened the game with a double and later scored on a ground-out by Petty. Clarion tied the game in the bottom of the first before Cal U countered with two runs in the second. Peters reached on a double and was then tagged out in a rundown that allowed junior right fielder
Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) to advance to second on the fielder's choice. Fennell followed with an RBI single through the middle and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Morales.
Both teams scored one run in the third before Petty collected a two-run single with two outs in the fourth, 6-3. Peters reached on a double in the fifth before scoring on an RBI single by Gasti down the right-field line. Peters posted a triple in the seventh and scored on a ground-out, 9-2.
Senior starter
Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) earned the victory after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks in 5.1 innings (66 pitches), striking out four. Junior
Adam Mylant (Latrobe, Pa./Derry) then tossed 1.2 scoreless inning of relief. Clarion starter Caleb McGary (1-5) suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs (all earned) on 12 hits in 4.1 innings (85 pitches).
In Game 2, Fennell tossed the second complete game of his career and tied his career high with seven strikeouts. He allowed one run (unearned) on six hits and one walk in 7.0 innings (113 pitches). Golden Eagles senior Brett Whitman (0-6) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on 11 hits in 7.0 innings (89 pitches).
In the top of the second, Peters lined a one-out single through the right side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Junior left fielder
John Orr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and Gasti followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases before Peters scored on a ground-out. The Vulcans added another run in the fourth, as freshman designated hitter
David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single by Peters before scoring on a ground-out, 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, three-straight Golden Eagles reached base with two outs before Fennell registered a strikeout to end the inning.
The Vulcans added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on three hits. Sophomore catcher
Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) and junior center fielder
Zak Schmidt (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) started the inning with back-to-back doubles before Petty later added an RBI single through the middle, 4-0. Fennell retired the first two Clarion batters before a throwing error eventually allowed the Golden Eagles to score their only run of the game.
Peters went 3-for-3 with one run scored in the nightcap, finishing 7-for-7 with two doubles, one triple and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Petty added a pair of hits and one RBI in the victory.
Cal U returns to action on Monday, April 8, with a nine-inning game at CONSOL Energy Park against Seton Hill, starting at 4 p.m.
