Baseball swept at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (April 26) – The Vulcans dropped both games of a doubleheader at Slippery Rock to move into a tie for second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West standings on Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 and 4-3 in extra innings.

With the losses, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team falls to 29-14 overall. The Vulcans and Rock are tied in the divisional standings with an 11-7 mark. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock improves to 29-15 this season after winning eight of its last nine games.

In Game 1, sophomore GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits in 3.2 innings (67 pitches). Slippery Rock junior Lou Trivino (6-4) earned the win after tossing a four-hit, complete-game shutout and registered seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings (78 pitches).

After a scoreless first, The Rock scored one run in each of the next four innings. The Vulcans were limited to just four base runners in the loss and left two runners in scoring position.

Senior first baseman AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) collected two of the team's four hits, finishing 2-for-3 while batting cleanup.

In Game 2, senior Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run (earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings (41 pitches) of relief. Freshman starter Jack Dennis (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park) took a no-decision after yielding three runs (two earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings (64 pitches). Rock reliever Mike Dunn (6-1) earned the win after tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.

After four scoreless innings, Slippery Rock took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Vulcans countered with two runs in the next inning to trim the deficit to 3-2. Petty reached on a one-out single and advanced to third on a single by Robinson before scoring on a ground-out. Sophomore shortstop Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) then delivered a two-out RBI double to right field after Robinson advanced to third on a passed ball.

The Vulcans tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Junior second baseman Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and junior third baseman Derrik Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) started the rally with back-to-back walks before Cal U loaded the bases on a single by junior pinch-hitter Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California). Morales then tied the game by scoring on a sacrifice fly by Petty.

Petty, who started the game at catcher, forced The Rock to strand a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Both team managed a two-out base runner in the eighth before Cal U moved a runner into scoring position in the top of the ninth. Slippery Rock collected back-to-back, one-out singles in the bottom of the inning before first baseman John Shaffer delivered a walk-off single.

Petty went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while six other players collected one hit.

Cal U resumes its weekend series with Slippery Rock tomorrow, Saturday, April 27, with a doubleheader at CONSOL Energy Park, starting at 2 p.m.
