Vulcans edged in sweep at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April 14) – The No. 28 California University of Pennsylvania baseball team suffered a pair of one-run losses in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, falling 6-5 and 2-1.

With the losses, the Vulcans fall to 24-10 this season with each of their last four losses all by one runs. Cal U also drops into a tie with Gannon for first place in the divisional standings at 9-3. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles improve to 13-16 overall behind an 8-8 record in league play.

In Game 1, Cal U rallied to tie the game by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. After a ground-out to start the inning, the Vulcans loaded the bases on three-straight walks before junior third baseman Derrik Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) scored on a sacrifice fly. Cal U drew another walk to load the bases before junior Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) reached on an error that allowed the game-tying run to score. In the bottom of the inning, the Bald Eagles drew a leadoff walk and followed with a double before the Vulcans issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Shortstop Ryan Henritzy then delivered the game-winning, walk-off single to left field, 6-5.

The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior catcher Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) scored from first on a two-out RBI double by senior first baseman AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle). Lock Haven tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded walk before taking a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Cal U evened the score in the sixth with an RBI double by freshman left fielder Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) and an RBI single by junior right fielder Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels), both with two outs. Lock Haven countered with a two-run homer by catcher Austin Botts to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth, 5-3.

Petty scored twice in the loss after reaching base on two walks.

Sophomore Kyle Mann (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits and two walks in 0.2 inning of relief. Senior starter Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) took a no-decision after yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits and four walks in 5.1 innings (95 pitches). Lock Haven freshman Garrett Shnyder (2-2) earned the victory after working 0.2 inning of relief.

In Game 2, the Bald Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the second. Cal U tied the game at 1-1 in the top of fifth when Petty scored from second on an RBI single by Robinson. In the sixth, Lock Haven scored the eventual game-winning run on a squeeze play.

Fennell (4-2) was saddled with the loss despite allowing two runs (both earned) and scattering just three hits in 6.0 innings, while striking out five. Lock Haven starter Madison Neddo (4-1) recorded the win after yielding one run on five hits and four walks in 6.0 innings (98 pitches), while junior Alec Jacob posted the save with a scoreless inning of relief.

Petty and Robinson both finished with two hits, combining for four of the team's five hits. Petty also stole a pair of bases in Game 2 and now leads the team with a career-high 25 steals, which surpasses his previous career total (24).

The Vulcans return to action with a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16, when they travel to face Alderson-Broaddus in Philippi, W.Va., at 1 p.m.
