WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team allowed just one run in a non-conference doubleheader sweep against Clarion on Friday afternoon, winning 10-0 and 3-1 at CONSOL Energy Park.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 6-2 this season after allowing only 16 earned runs in eight games. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles remain winless this year and fall to 0-4.
In Game 1, senior
Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) and junior
Adam Mylant (Latrobe, Pa./Derry) combined for a four-hit shutout. Thomas scattered four hits and recorded six strikeouts with no walks in 6.0 innings (85 pitches). The 6-3 senior allowed only three runners to reach scoring position before Mylant worked a scoreless seventh inning.
Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the first without collecting a hit, as junior center fielder
Zak Schmidt (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a leadoff walk. In the second, the first two batters for Clarion reached on singles before being caught in rundowns on pickoff throws by Thomas. The Vulcans added to their lead in the third, scoring three runs on three-straight hits. Schmidt led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Junior
Derrik Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) followed with another infield single that allowed Schmidt to move to third before both runners advanced on a balk. Senior catcher
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) followed with a two-run homer (eighth career) over the left-field wall, 4-0.
In the fourth, the Vulcans increased the lead to 5-0 when junior right fielder
Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) scored from first on a throwing error on a bunt single by junior second baseman
Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep). Clarion threatened with two runners in scoring position in the top of sixth before Cal U sealed the victory in the bottom of the inning by scoring four runs on four hits. Junior pinch-hitter
John Orr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) started the inning with a single and stole second before scoring on a throwing error that allowed sophomore
Kyle Mann (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) to reach base. After a single and steal by Petty, senior
AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) lined a two-run double to right-center field before sophomore shortstop
Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) drove an RBI single to center field.
Petty went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored, while Gasti and Morales both collected two hits and scored once. Schmidt scored twice while batting leadoff for the first time this season.
Clarion starter Brett Whitman (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks in 3.0-plus innings (51 pitches).
In Game 2, freshman
Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned his first career win after yielding one run (unearned) on five hits while posting seven strikeouts 6.0 innings (86 pitches). Petty, who started the game at third base, registered his eighth career save after working a scoreless seventh inning.
In the top of the second, Clarion had two runners in scoring position before a fielder's choice at home and a comebacker prevented a run from scoring. The Vulcans manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore
Justin Taylor (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle) opened the inning with a double and Gasti later reached on a hit by pitch. Taylor then scored on an RBI ground-out before Schmidt collected a two-out RBI single through the middle.
The Golden Eagles countered with an unearned run in the third to trim the deficit to 2-1. Clarion advanced a runner into scoring position with two outs in both the fifth and sixth innings before Fennell retired the next batter both times to preserve the lead. In the sixth, the Vulcans added an insurance run when Petty, who reached on a triple, scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher
Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry).
Petty collected two of the team's six hits, finishing 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Clarion freshman Tyler Delval (0-1) tossed a complete game in the losing effort, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits and one walk.
The Vulcans are tentatively scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 13, with a doubleheader at Salem International, starting at 1 p.m.
