WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 17) – Behind a complete-game shutout by senior Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) on Sunday afternoon, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team split a doubleheader with Grand Valley State (Mich.) at CONSOL Energy Park, falling 2-0 before earning a 3-0 win in the nightcap.

With the split, the Vulcans move to 13-3 this season after winning 10 of their last 11 games. Cal U has now played eight games (three doubleheaders) in the last seven days. Meanwhile, the Lakers are now 6-7 overall after winning seven of the last nine Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) titles.

Petty made his first start of the season in Game 2 after entering the day with only 2.0 innings pitched this year. He limited Grand Valley State to just three hits and two walks in 7.0 innings (90 pitches) on Sunday. After allowing six base runners in the first two-plus innings, Petty retired 14 of the next 15 batters in order to earn his 12th career victory.

In the top of the first, the Lakers had runners on the corners with one out before Petty fielded a checked-swing grounder in front of the mound and threw home to get the runner attempting score from third. GVSU again had a runner in scoring position in the second inning before Petty forced back-to-back pop-ups to shallow right field. Cal U countered with a two-out, two-run rally in the bottom of the inning on just one single, 2-0. Freshman left fielder Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) started the rally with a single and advanced to second when junior right fielder Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) reached on a hit by pitch. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before back-to-back wild pitches allowed both Fennell and Gasti to score. The Vulcans added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo homer by sophomore catcher Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry), 3-0.

Kaufman finished 2-for-3, highlighted by his first career homer, in the victory, while Fennell collected a pair of hits on Sunday.

GVSU starter Sean Clancy (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks in 6.0 innings (75 pitches).

In Game 1, sophomore GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) dropped to 2-2 this after posting his second complete game of the year. He yielded just two runs (both earned) on six hits with no walks in 7.0 innings (71 pitches), while posting five strikeouts.

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on three-straight singles before Senchak allowed just two base runners until the seventh inning. Following a leadoff double, GVSU manufactured an insurance run with a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly, 2-0.

GVSU senior Anthony Campanella (2-2) tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and issued no walks in 7.0 innings (76 pitches). He allowed only one base runner to advance into scoring position, as Petty, who started at third base, collected a two-out double in the first.

The Vulcans open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Friday, March 22, with a home doubleheader against Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
