WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep over Glenville State at CONSOL Energy Park on Thursday afternoon, winning 18-0 and 4-2.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 11-2 this season while playing their 10th-consecutive home game. Cal U has engineered its longest win streak since posting a 12-game win streak during the 2010 campaign. Meanwhile, Glenville State falls to 1-14 overall after the program was reinstated last year following a near 30-year hiatus.
In Game 1, Cal U set a season high with 18 runs and the run differential marked the largest margin of victory since posting a 25-2 win at Gannon on April 29, 2003. The Vulcans scored a combined 17 runs in the first three innings and batted around in both the first and second. Nine different players collected at least one hit in the victory and nine players scored at least once.
Senior left-hander
Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) earned the victory after scattering three hits and two walks over 4.0 scoreless innings (45 pitches). Sophomore

In the bottom of the first, Cal U scored five runs on just three singles and the first seven batters reached base. Senior catcher
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) started the scoring with a two-run single to left field before scoring on an RBI single by freshman designated hitter
David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin), 3-0. The Vulcans later scored in the inning on a fielder's choice and a fielding error.
The Vulcans then erupted for nine runs to the second after 14 batters went to the plate. Petty opened the inning with a triple and scored on double steal before an RBI triple by Marcus, who scored on an RBI single by freshman left fielder
Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler). After a hit by pitch and stolen bases, Fennell scored on a fielding error before another run scored on a sacrifice fly. Senior first baseman
AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) then lined a three-run triple to right-center field before scoring on a single by Marcus.
Junior right fielder
Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) led off the third with a solo homer down the left-field line before adding runs on an RBI single by junior
Chad Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) and a sacrifice fly. The Vulcans later posted a run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by sophomore
Chris Mitko (Columbus, Ohio/Northland), 18-0.
Petty, who played four different positions in the win, went 3-for-3 with one triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Marcus finished 3-for-4 with one triple, three RBI and two runs, while Robinson also posted three RBI and three runs. Four other players scored two runs in the victory.
Glenville State starter Tyler Wiseman suffered the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (seven earned) on five hits and five walks in 1.0-plus innings. Wiseman tossed 40 pitches in the first inning with only 16 being for strikes.
In the nightcap, Fennell improved to 2-0 this year after yielding two runs (both earned) on nine hits and one walk in 6.2 innings (104 pitches). Junior

Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Peters then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitko.
The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the third before the Vulcans countered with a run in the bottom of the inning, 3-2. Petty reached on a two-out single before advancing to third on a pair of stolen bases. Robinson then drew an eight-pitch walk and stole second before a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by the catcher allowed Petty to score.
Cal U later manufactured an insurance run in the fifth without tallying a hit. Mitko drew a leadoff walk and stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. Following a walk, Mitko scored on a ground-out to shortstop. Glenville State collected three singles in the seventh to score one run and had runners on first and second before Mylant induced a fly-out to seal the victory.
