Cal U claims win over Fairmont State, 12-4

CALIFORNIA (March 11) – The Vulcans extended their winning streak to four games on Monday afternoon, earning a 12-4 victory against Fairmont State at Roadman Park.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 7-2 overall. The game marked the first game for the Vulcans on campus since March 22, 2007. Meanwhile, Fairmont State falls to 3-5 this season after winning three of its previous four games.

Sophomore GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) improved to 2-1 this season and established a career high with eight strikeouts. He yielded four runs (all earned) on seven hits and issued five walks in 6.2 innings (107 pitches). Freshman Cory Craig (Youngsville, Pa./Youngsville) and senior Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) combined to toss 2.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.

In the bottom of the first, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI double by senior first baseman (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle). Cal U added to its lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Sophomore shortstop Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa. Upper Darby) opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by freshman left fielder Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler). Junior right fielder Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) followed with an RBI single before Fennell scored on a fielder's choice. The Vulcans later had runners on second and third before Petty lined a two-run triple to right-center field, 5-0.

Fairmont State countered with two runs in the second after collecting two singles and three walks, 5-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Cal U increased its lead by scoring three runs on just one hit. The Vulcans loaded the bases on two walks and a single before the runs scored on three-straight fielder's choices. The Fighting Falcons posted a pair of runs in the seventh and had runners in scoring position before Craig ended the threat by striking out the first batter he faced.

The Vulcans, who turned four double plays and stole six bases, sealed the victory in the eighth by scoring four runs to increase the lead to 12-4. Sophomore Chris Mitko (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI single by Petty, who later scored on a throwing error. Junior John Orr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) added to the lead with a two-out, two-run single through the middle.

Petty posted his fourth multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-5 with one triple, three RBI, one run scored and two stolen bases. Fennell added a pair of hits, while Peters and Robinson each scored twice in the victory.

Fairmont State starter Tyler Lucas suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits and three walks in 4.0-plus innings. The Fighting Falcons issued a combined nine walks and allowed 11 hits in the loss.

The Vulcans are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 13, with a doubleheader at Salem International, starting at 1 p.m.

Note: The game was played at Roadman Park due to scheduled field maintenance at CONSOL Energy Park.
