Vulcans claim shutout over Gannon, 3-0

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 6) – The No. 19 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team scored three goals in less than 10 minutes late in the second half on Saturday night to earn a 3-0 win over No. 25 Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the Vulcans extended their winning streak to seven games and are now 7-2-1 overall with a 7-1-0 mark in league play. Cal U has also extended its shutout streak to over 575 minutes after recording six-consecutive shutouts. Meanwhile, Gannon falls to 6-3 this season – all in conference action.

The game remained scoreless until the 79th minute when sophomore Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist from freshman Danielle Kearns (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes). Less than two minutes, junior Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) added a goal in the upper right corner from just outside the goalie box off a feed from classmate Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), marking her fifth-straight game with at least one point. Junior Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) later added her team-leading fifth goal of the year at the 87:49-mark off an assist from sophomore Lauren Pezzica (Brownstown, Pa./Conestoga Valley).

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) made two saves on Saturday while recording her fourth-consecutive shutout. The Vulcans out-shot the Golden Knights by a 27-8 margin, with 18 attempts in the second half, and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action with back-to-back road games next weekend, starting at Lock Haven on Friday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m.
