CALIFORNIA (Sept. 25) – Sophomore
Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) tallied a career-high five points and was one of four players to score a goal on Tuesday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team earned a 5-1 win against Pitt-Johnstown at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 3-5 overall after scoring their most goals in a game since September 2011. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats remain winless at 0-8 this season.
UPJ took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute before Cal U scored a pair of goals in less than two minutes. Kyei evened the score at the 19:14-mark off a pass from classmate
Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio Gahanna Lincoln) before Kyei scored his team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 21st minute with assists from seniors
Ryan Slaby (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and
Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic).
Following halftime, the Vulcans added to their lead in the 64th minute when senior
Billy Wilson (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Andrew's and St. Brides) scored on a header following a corner kick by Kyei. Moehler posted his third goal of the season (unassisted) at the 70:49-mark before sophomore
Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored off a feed from classmate
Jon Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) in the 80th minute.
Sophomore
Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) earned the victory after playing nearly 80 minutes on Tuesday, while Mountain Cats' Eddie Stover recorded eight saves in the loss.
The Vulcans return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play this weekend with a pair of road league games, starting on Friday, Sept. 28, at Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
