WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 18) – After being held to one run and two hits in Game 1, the Vulcans rallied to claim a doubleheader split on Wednesday afternoon against Davis & Elkins at CONSOL Energy Park, falling 5-1 before winning 6-4.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team moves to 23-17 overall. Meanwhile, D&E is now 16-23 this season.

In Game 2, the Vulcans used four different pitchers with senior Ryan Hulme (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) earning the win by tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit relief. Freshman GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) registered his first career save after yielding one hit in a scoreless seventh inning. Senators' starter Cory Keesee (1-4) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks in 4.2 innings (95 pitches).

Junior third baseman Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) opened the bottom of the first with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single by senior second baseman Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star). After Bowser stole second, senior Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) lined a two-run single down the left-field line before being thrown out at second, 2-0.

D&E countered with a run in the second before scoring three runs in the third off freshman starter Luke Burton (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) to take a 4-1 lead. The Vulcans responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead, 4-3. Handza started the rally with an infield single and advanced to third on a stolen base and ground-out. Following a walk, sophomore shortstop Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) lined a three-run homer – his second of the year – over the left-field wall.

In the bottom of the sixth, redshirt sophomore left fielder Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to third on a stolen base and sacrifice bunt by Petty. The Vulcans then added an insurance run when Morales scored on a squeeze bunt by Bowser, 6-3.

Handza collected his 14th multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored and one steal. Bowser also added a pair of hits and stole three bases in the victory.

In Game 1, freshman Dave Kucenic (South Park, Pa./South Park) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits and two walks in 4.0 innings (77 pitches). D&E junior Colby Fisher (2-1) tossed just 76 pitches in the complete-game victory, yielding one run on two hits and one walk in 7.0 innings.

The Senators took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-run triple after the inning started with back-to-back walks. D&E added insurance runs in both the fourth and fifth before Cal U avoided the shutout in the sixth when Petty belted a solo homer, his third of the season.

Starting at right field in Game 1, Petty tallied both of the hits for the Vulcans while batting leadoff for the first time in his career. He finished 2-for-3 for his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season.

Cal U returns to divisional play this weekend with a four-game series against Gannon, beginning with a doubleheader in Erie, Pa., on Friday, April 20, starting at 1 p.m. Live stats of the games will be available by clicking here.
