Baseball falls at No. 25 Armstrong Atlantic, 19-3

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 13) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team closed play at the Savannah Invitational on Tuesday afternoon with a 19-3 loss to host and No. 25 Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.).

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 9-7 overall after posting a 2-2 mark in the Peach State. The 19 runs allowed are the highest single-game total by Cal U since March 2010 when it suffered a 19-6 loss at Mars Hill (N.C.). Meanwhile, the Pirates won their sixth-consecutive game to improve to 15-5 this season.

After scoring a run in the first, Armstrong Atlantic scored four runs in the bottom of the second behind a three-run double by left fielder Zach Taylor. The Pirates added a solo homer by right fielder Cody Powell and a three-run triple from Taylor in the third en route to taking a 12-0 lead.

Armstrong Atlantic continued to increase its lead in the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits and a fielding error, 16-0. The Vulcans engineered three runs in the fifth behind three hits and one error. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, senior second baseman Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) collected a two-run triple before scoring on a dropped fly by the right fielder. However, the Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 19-3 lead.

In his second career start, freshman Dave Kucenic (South Park, Pa./South Park) suffered the loss after being roughed up for 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits and three walks in 2.0-plus innings. Pirates' starter Jimmy Couglin (2-0) earned the win after allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits in 4.0-plus innings.

Bowser collected two of the team's six hits in the loss, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

The Vulcans continue their southern trip tomorrow, Wednesday, March 14, when they face No. 22 Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., at 1 p.m. Live stats of the game are scheduled to be available by clicking here.
