SOUTH PARK, Pa. (Feb. 18) – After sweeping doubles play on Saturday evening, the No. 11 Vulcans registered an 8-1 win against Carnegie Mellon, the No. 13 team in NCAA Division III, at Glen Creek Tennis Club.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 5-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Tartans fall to 4-1 this season after previously posting wins this spring over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) members IUP and Slippery Rock – two of the top three teams in the Atlantic Region.

Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) started doubles session with an 8-3 win at the second position over Carnegie Mellon's Katie Cecil and Chelsea Motie. At first doubles, the No. 6 duo of seniors
Martina Rubesova (Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Dr. Vaclava Smejkala) and
Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) earned an 8-2 victory against Laura Chen and Courtney Chin. The Vulcans completed the doubles sweep when freshmen
Jolien Borrenberghs (Hasselt, Belgium/KA2 Sportschool) and
Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College), who was making here college debut, dealt Angela Pratt and Bryn Raschke an 8-5 defeat at the third position.
Rubesova, who is the No. 12 singles player, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Chen at the first position. Pieschl then registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carnegie Mellon's Chin at second singles before freshman
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Cze-Ja Tam at the sixth position. The Tartans then earned their lone victory of the match when Motie defeated Steinhardt, 6-3, 6-3, at fourth singles. Junior
Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Pratt at the fifth position before Pondicas closed the match with a 7-6, 6-1 win against Cecil at third singles.
The Vulcans return to action on Thursday, Feb. 23, when they travel to face Denison, the No. 6 team in NCAA Division III.
