WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 18) – Junior
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) registered four RBI and earned a complete-game victory on Saturday afternoon to help lead the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Fairmont State at CONSOL Energy Park, winning 18-5 and 3-2.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 3-1 this season. The doubleheader marked the first home games for Cal U played in February since 2006. Meanwhile, the Fighting Falcons open the year with a 0-2 record.
Junior
Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) improved to 2-0 this year after allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits and five walks in Game 1. Freshmen
Andre Jones (New Castle, Pa./Union) and
Dave Kucenic (South Park, Pa./South Park) each made their collegiate debuts by tossing 1.0 inning of relief.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the first, the Vulcans expanded their lead with a five-run, two-out rally in the second. Junior designated hitter
AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) delivered a two-out, three-run triple before scoring on a RBI double by Petty. Bowser followed with another RBI single to score Petty and increase the lead to 5-0.
Cal U continued to add to its lead in the third with seven runs on five hits (four singles), 14-0. After a RBI groundout, senior
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) collected a RBI single before scoring on a two-run double by Petty. Freshman shortstop
Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) drew a bases-loaded walk before sophomore left fielder
Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) delivered a two-run double.
In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Joey Borelli (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) registered his first career RBI on a triple to expand the lead to 15-0. Fairmont State then scored three runs with two outs in the fifth before scoring another run in the sixth. The Vulcans countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by Bowser, RBI sacrifice fly by redshirt sophomore
Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and RBI single by freshman right fielder
John Orr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler).
Petty was one of five starters to collect at least two hits in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Robinson and Bowser both finished with three hits and three RBI, while sophomore
Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) scored four runs.
In the nightcap, Petty (1-0) yielded two runs (both earned) on six hits and two walks while registering four strikeouts in 7.0 innings. It marked the second complete game of his career, both coming against Fairmont State (April 3, 2010).
The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by Gasti. Fairmont State answered with a run in the second before taking a 2-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the fifth, freshman designated hitter
GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) reached on a single and Morales stole second as a pinch runner. Freshman pinch hitter
Justin Taylor (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle) reached on an error before Morales stole third. After a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Robinson delivered the eventual game-winning, two-run double that plated Morales and Jones, who pinch ran for Taylor. Pitching with a 3-2 lead, Petty retired the Fighting Falcons in order in the seventh behind a pair of strikeouts.
Robinson collected two of the five hits for the Vulcans in Game 2, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Cal U returns to action on Monday, Feb. 20, with a nine-inning game against Penn State-Greater Allegheny at CONSOL Energy Park. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
