JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (May 13) – The Vulcans scored three runs in the eighth and loaded the bases on Friday afternoon before being eliminated from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament with an 8-4 loss to Millersville at Point Stadium.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team falls to 30-18 this season after winning the league title last year. In terms of the NCAA Tournament, the Vulcans were sixth in the latest Atlantic Regional rankings before posting a 1-2 mark in the conference tournament with the losses being by a combined five runs and against the top-two ranked teams in the region, Millersville and Mercyhurst. Meanwhile, the Marauders improved to 39-9 before falling in extra innings to Mercyhurst in extra innings late Friday night.
Senior
Ryan MacNamara (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) made the start and suffered the loss (5-4) after allowing six runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks in 4.0-plus innings (70 pitches). Sophomore
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) tied his season high by tossing 4.2 innings (57 pitches) of relief on Thursday, yielding one run (earned) on three hits with two strikeouts.
After MacNamara retired Millersville in order in the top of the first, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore second baseman
Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led off with a walk and senior third baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) then reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. After a double steal moved both runners into scoring position, junior designated hitter
Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) lined a single to left field to score King while Ordy was thrown out at home attempting to score from second.
The Marauders responded by scoring a pair of runs in the second before expanding the lead to 3-1 with a solo homer by center fielder Jeff Heisey. Millersville added to its lead in the fourth when shortstop Mike August scored from third on a throw by the catcher to first on a dropped third strike, 4-1. In the fifth, the Marauders expanded their lead to 7-1 with four singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The next inning, Heisey again belted a solo homer (seventh of the season) to stretch the lead to 8-1.
After scoring in the first, Cal U left seven runners on base (four in scoring position) before rallying to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on first and second, senior shortstop
Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) collected an RBI single through the right side before senior first baseman
Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) singled to right field to load the bases. Freshman catcher
Devin Dellinger (Dover, Pa./Dover) then drew a bases-loaded walk before senior right fielder
Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) registered an RBI single, 8-4. Millersville reliever Adam Zipko then forced a shallow fly-out and ground-out to end the threat.
In the ninth, Bowser reached base on a one-out single before Zipko induced a double play to end the game.
Bowser, Links and Faust each collected two hits and combined for six of the team's nine hits (all singles) on Friday. Bowser went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run, while Faust was 2-for-2 with one RBI after entering the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. With his single in the eighth, Teagarden extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Marauders' starter Mike McMonagle (7-1) earned the win after yielding just one run (earned) on five hits and four walks in 7.0 innings (116 pitches). Zipko earned his first save of the season after working 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Cal U must now wait to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with the
selection show on NCAA.com set for Sunday, May 15, on NCAA.com at 10 p.m. The Vulcans have made the NCAA Tournament twice in the last four years.
