BUTLER, Pa. (April 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team used three pitchers to claim a pair of shutout victories on Saturday against Clarion at Pullman Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 8-0 and 1-0.

With the sweep, the Vulcans have now five of their last seven games to improve to 16-12 overall. Cal U now holds a 6-7 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drops to 5-18 this season with a 3-5 record in divisional play.

In Game 1, junior Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout (83 pitches) to improve to 6-2 this season. He registered six strikeouts and issued no walks in the victory to become one of only four pitchers in school history with 200 career strikeouts. Sturgill also is now tied for third place in school history with 19 victories.

After Sturgill retired the side in order, Cal U took a 3-0 led in the bottom of the first. Sophomore second baseman Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led off the game with a single and advanced to third on a double by junior center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler). Senior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) followed with a single that scored King while Handza scored on a throwing error that allowed Links to move over to third. Senior third baseman Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) added the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, 3-0.

The Vulcans expanded their lead with two runs on three hits in the fifth. After back-to-back singles, Links delivered a RBI double and Ordy again tallied a RBI on a sacrifice fly. The offense continued for Cal U in the sixth, as it added three runs to take an 8-0 lead. Senior right fielder Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) led off the inning with a single and stole second and third before scoring on a ground out by designated hitter Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star). King and senior shortstop Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) collected back-to-back singles and after a double steal moved both runners into scoring position Handza posted a two-run single.

Handza led five players with multi-hit games, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. King, Teagarden, Links and sophomore catcher Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) each collected two hits.

Golden Eagles' starter Sam Skraba (0-1) suffered the loss and worked only 1.1 innings (36 hits), allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits.

In the nightcap, senior Ryan MacNamara (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) and Petty combined for a four-hit, complete-game shutout. MacNamara improved to 3-3 this season after scattering two hits and two walks in 4.2 innings (65 pitches), while Petty recorded the save after allowing two hits in 2.1 innings of relief (33 pitches).

The Vulcans broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when Ordy lined a two-out, RBI double to the right-center field gap that scored Links from first. In the top of the fifth, the first two batters for Clarion reached safely before MacNamara registered a strikeout and forced a shallow fly-out to right field. Following a walk loaded the bases, Petty relived MacNamara and recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

In the top of the seventh, right fielder Bill Hasson led off with a single for the Golden Eagles before Petty induced a double play and fly-out for his sixth career save.

Cal U continues its weekend series with Clarion tomorrow, Sunday, April 10, with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
