WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 30) – Junior Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) tied the single-season and career school records for wins on Saturday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park, as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept a doubleheader against IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 4-1 and 6-3.

With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 28-16 overall and clinch the third seed from the PSAC West with a 13-10 mark in league play. Cal U has made the PSAC Tournament 10 times in the last 11 seasons, highlighted by conference titles in 2004 and 2010. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks drop to 19-27 this season and are the fourth seed from the PSAC West in the upcoming PSAC Tournament with an 11-13 record in divisional action.

In Game 1, Sturgill tossed a complete game to improve his record to 9-2 this year, which tied the school record for most wins in a season originally set by Rick Krist (1994) and tied by Sturgill in 2010. He limited the Crimson Hawks to one run (earned) and scattered five hits while registering nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings (104 pitches) on Saturday. Sturgill (102) is the first Cal U pitcher since former major-leaguer and Olympian Rick Krivda (1991) to register 100 strikeouts in a season. He also tied Krivda's all-time record with 22 career victories on Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park.

The Vulcans threatened with a runner on third in the first and third innings before breaking the scoreless tie with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth. Senior catcher Eric Berringer (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a wild pitch and ground-out. Junior center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) then delivered a two-out RBI single to give Cal U a 1-0 lead before senior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) followed with a single. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, senior left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) collected a two-run double down the right-field line before scoring on a single by senior shortstop Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), 4-0.

IUP avoided the shutout with back-to-back, two-out hits in the top of the seventh, including an RBI single by first baseman Andrew Welch. Sturgill then finished the game with a called third strike for his 16th career complete game, which ties Carl Robaugh (1996-99) and Marty Kenny (1985, 1987-89) for third in school history.

Crimson Hawks' starter Pat Bradley (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just one run (earned) and two hits in 4.1 innings of work (76 pitches).

In the nightcap, the Vulcans used three pitchers to claim the victory. Senior starter Corry Ryan (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) earned the win after yielding three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Junior Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) registered the save in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts.

Cal U took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by senior third baseman Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler), first of the season (second career). The Vulcans then added to their lead in the second with four runs on three hits and one error. Teagarden started the inning with a double and senior designated hitter Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) reached on a catcher's interference before Cal U loaded the bases with a bunt single by freshman right fielder Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California). Berringer then cleared the bases with a three-run double before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Links, 5-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Vulcans expanded its lead to 6-0 on a two-out RBI single by Links. The following inning, IUP scored three runs on four hits, one walk and one hit by pitch to cut the deficit to 6-3. After an RBI single by first baseman Andrew Welch, the Crimson Hawks added a run on a single by second baseman Mike Lupia before another run scored on a throwing error. With one out and the bases loaded, Kirker entered the game and registered back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Links paced the offensive effort, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Berringer finished with three RBI on Senior Day.

IUP's Chris Douglas (5-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings (37 pitches).

The Vulcans are now idle for nearly two weeks before opening play in the PSAC Tournament from May 11-14 at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa. Last year, Cal U won the double-elimination, eight-team tournament, capped by a walk-off victory against nationally-ranked Kutztown in the PSAC Championship.
