Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) registered 12 strikeouts in Game 1 and junior
Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) collected a go-ahead double in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap, as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team claimed a doubleheader sweep, 5-1 and 5-3, over Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon at Pullman Park.
With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 23-14 overall and 9-8 in divisional action. Cal U, who was sixth in the first NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings released this week, has now won 10 of its last 12 games. Meanwhile, Gannon falls to 14-22 this season with a 9-13 mark in league play.
In Game 1, Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) improved to 8-2 this season after tossing his seventh complete game this year. He allowed just one run and scattered six hits with no walks in 7.0 innings (100 pitches). A preseason candidate for the Tino Martinez Award, Sturgill tied his season and career high with 12 strikeouts against the Golden Knights. He now ranks second in school history and is tied for 13th place in PSAC history with 226 career strikeouts.
After a scoreless first inning, Gannon was in position to take the lead in the second when it had two runners in scoring position before Sturgill recorded a strikeout to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning, the Vulcans took a 2-0 lead on two hits and one error. Senior shortstop
Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) started the rally by reaching on a fielding error before scoring from first on a RBI double by senior right fielder
Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), 1-0. After Faust moved to third on a wild pitch, sophomore catcher
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) followed with a RBI double to left field to expand the lead to 2-0.
Cal U appeared to be in position to add to its lead in the third when it had runners on second and third before the Golden Knights retired the next two batters to keep the deficit at 2-0. Gannon later scored its only run of the game when left fielder Michael Tomko led off the fourth with his fourth homer of the season. Following the homer, the Golden Knights had runners on first and second before Sturgill retired the next two batters in order to preserve the lead.
The Vulcans expanded their lead to 5-1 by scoring three runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. Senior first baseman
Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by senior left fielder
Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East). After a caught stealing at second, Teagarden collected a RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-1. Cal U eventually loaded the bases and added to its lead with RBI singles by Bowser and sophomore second baseman
Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg).
The PSAC West Pitcher of the Year in 2010, Sturgill retired nine of the last 10 batters for Gannon, highlighted by striking out the side in order in the seventh.
Gannon's David Hucsko (2-6) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and recording four strikeouts in 6.0 innings (105 pitches).
Faust paced the Vulcans' offense, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. King posted his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season and Teagarden also scored twice in Game 1.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) earned the game-complete victory to improve to 4-3 this year. He yielded three runs (two earned) on eight hits in 7.0 innings (109 pitches) with six strikeouts.
After Gannon moved a runner to third base in the first, Cal U took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning behind three singles. King started the game with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and single before scoring on a two-out RBI single by Welsh.
The Vulcans added to their lead in the third with back-to-back, two-out hits. Junior center fielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) lined a double to right-center field and Links followed with an RBI single, 2-0. Gannon responded by tying the score in the top of the fourth with two runs on three hits and one error. With runners on second and third, third baseman Lou Downey reached base on a two-out infield single, and an errant throw on the play allowed the runner from second to score.
Cal U reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth by manufacturing a run, 3-2. Teagarden started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bowser then registered an RBI with a sacrifice fly that allowed Teagarden to score. The Golden Knights then evened the score at 3-3 in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by second baseman Eric Bradley.
The Vulcans responded by scoring the eventual game-winning runs with a two-out rally in the sixth. Teagarden started the charge with a single and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Faust then followed with a single that moved Teagarden to third. After a pitching change, Bowser collected a two-run double to right-center field to give Cal U a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Thomas issued a leadoff walk before Welsh made a running catch down the leftfield line. Thomas then induced a game-ending double play to shortstop to give Cal U the sweep.
Golden Knights' starter Paul McKenna (2-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 5.2 innings (85 pitches).
Teagarden led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Handza collected two hits in the nightcap.
