GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team finished the weekend by winning two of three games against Atlantic Region-rival Seton Hill after splitting a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, winning 11-10 before falling 6-0 in the nightcap.

With the split, the Vulcans move to 20-13 overall and have now won seven of their last eight games. Meanwhile, the Griffins move to 23-8 this season after winning the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Tournament last season.

In Game 1, the two teams combined for 21 runs on 20 hits and 12 walks. Senior starter Ryan MacNamara (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) recorded the win to improve to 4-3 this season after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks in 5.0-plus innings. After Seton Hill scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, junior Ryan Hulme (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) registered his second save of the year by retiring the only two batters he faced.

After both teams scored runs in the first, the Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the top of the second by scoring five runs on five hits (all singles) and two walks, 7-2. With the bases loaded, freshman catcher Devin Dellinger (Dover, Pa./Dover) tied the game with a RBI ground-out before senior third baseman Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) delivered a two-out, two-run double. Following a walk, senior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) and senior left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) collected RBI singles to expand the lead to 7-2.

Cal U added to its lead in the third when junior center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) tallied a two-run double that scored junior designated hitter Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) and Dellinger, 9-2. In the fifth, both teams benefited from errors and scored a pair of runs, as the Vulcans led 11-4.

In the seventh, Seton Hill cut the deficit to 11-8 on a three-run homer by third baseman Tom DeAngelis. After a pitching change, the Griffins trimmed the lead to 11-10 on a bases-loaded walk and ground-out before Hulme retired the final batter of the game on a called third strike.

Bowser tied his career high by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ordy and Links each collected two hits. Ordy also registered three RBI in the win with Handza and Links tallying two RBI each.

Griffins' starter Brad Schnelle (5-1) suffered the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and four walks in only 2.2 innings.

In the nightcap, Cal U out-hit Seton Hill, but committed two costly errors and left nine runners on base. Junior Pat Gannon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) made his first start of the season and yielded six runs (one earned) on six hits in 4.0-plus innings. Senior Corry Ryan (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) tossed two scoreless innings of relief in his fourth appearance of the year.

The Griffins took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out error before scoring three more unearned runs in the third. In the fifth, Seton Hill stretched its lead to 6-0 on a RBI single by left fielder Brendan Costantino before Ryan retired all five batters he faced in order.

In the loss, Ordy finished 3-for-4 and Links extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Seton Hill senior Brian Warheit and junior Christian Muth combined for the seven-hit shutout with Warheit (3-0) earning the winning after striking out seven in 5.0 innings of work.

Following a recent schedule change, Cal U returns to the diamond tomorrow, Monday, April 18, when it faces Clarion in a doubleheader at Pullman Park in Butler, Pa. The Golden Eagles will be the home team for both games and the twinbill is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
